Postural Re-Alignment

What is good posture?
Good posture or Correct Posture is the optimal alignment of muscles and bones within the body. Having correct posture assists with efficient movements, healthy muscles, joints and nervous systems.

It is determined by an imaginary line passing through the ear, shoulder, a set of points alongside the hip, knee and ankle. In addition to this, correct posture is determined by the height difference between each shoulder, the pelvis, knees and ankles.

Importance of postural assessment
Postural evaluation or analysis consists of evaluating a client’s posture through a series of appropriate tests and measurements. These evaluations are non invasive and should not cause the client any physical discomfort under normal circumstances.

Due to the number of body parts and functions involved in good posture, a postural evaluation serves to help check any deviations from normal posture. It is important to identify any deviations as they increase the risk of injuries and may interfere with day to day performance and basic functionality.

Effects of poor posture
Having poor posture can lead to pain primarily because stresses on a joint cause inflammation. Stress on a joint occurs when the joint isn’t balanced and depends on where the line of gravity falls in relation to the centre of the joint.

Balance is achieved with the correct exercise to increase flexibility and strength; If accompanied by muscle therapies, it will decrease tension and possible inflammation around the joint.
